Important Elements to Your Exercise Program

The elements of physical fitness are the same no matter what your age: endurance, strength, flexibility, coordination, agility, core function, and balance.

As we age, it becomes even more important to maintain a consistent exercise program with these elements. Our bodies become more prone to disease and injury. Just thirty minutes of exercise a day promotes new cell growth throughout all the organs and tissues in our bodies.

A favorite quote of mine is “We make time for what is important to us!”

Ask yourself, “Do I want to live a long and healthy life?” Almost everyone will answer yes to this question. If you answered yes, PLEASE give yourself the gift of time. Schedule an appointment with YOU and make time to exercise at least 30 minutes a day. Look at your calendar for the month in advance and write down when you will exercise. We do this for a hair cut, a doctor’s appointment, meetings and parties! Make living a healthy life a priority!

Initially, you may need a little extra motivation and direction. Seeking the support and expertise of a certified personal trainer will help you to develop an exercise program that combines all the important elements. MAKE TIME FOR YOU! Those who love you will be happy you did! YOU will be happier too!

Estrogen Therapy for Women

By LifeLogic, Inc. Medical Staff

Estrogen is a female hormone produced in the ovaries and adrenal glands and, along with progesterone and testosterone, is absolutely essential for health and well-being.

Beginning with menopause estrogen levels begin to decline dramatically and by the end of menopause are essentially non-existent.  These low to non-existent levels of estrogen (along with progesterone) in menopausal and post-menopausal women are what cause the typical symptoms of menopause—hot flashes, fatigue, insomnia, anxiety/depression, mood swings, vaginal dryness and decreased libido.  All of these symptoms are significantly alleviated, and in many cases completely eliminated, by the proper use of natural, bio-identical estrogen.

Furthermore, in menopausal and post-menopausal women, these low to non-existent levels of estrogen dramatically increase a woman’s risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, osteoporosis (thinning bones), and Alzheimer’s Disease.  The risk of all of these diseases is significantly reduced by the proper use of natural, bio-identical estrogen.  Estrogen has also been shown to lower total blood cholesterol and increase HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol).

Natural, bio-identical estrogen (as is the case with natural, bio-identical progesterone), should not be confused with synthetic estrogens such a Premarin.  Premarin is a synthetic drug that is not natural to the human body and has dangerous and unwanted side effects.  Premarin is made from horse urine and the name Premarin is a contraction for pregnant mare’s urine. Whereas synthetic hormones, including synthetic estrogens, have been implicated in an increased risk of breast and uterine cancer, thrombotic disease (blood clots) and cardiovascular disease—natural, bio-identical estrogen does NOT increase these risks and has been shown to be safe and effective.

In summary, benefits of natural, bio-identical estrogen include:

  • Reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Protects against vaginal atrophy, urinary incontinence, and urinary infections
  • Alleviation of menopausal symptoms
  • Improved mood and sense of well-being
  • Increased libido
  • Increased energy and mental alertness
Additionally, there is NO evidence that natural, bio-identical estrogen increases the risk of breast cancer or thrombotic disease (blood clots).

What are hormones?

Hormones are substances released by glands in the body which act as messengers and affect the function of cells and tissues throughout the body. Hormones are not drugs—they are natural substances produced in our bodies which are essential for the proper functioning of our bodies. As we age, for both men and women, there is a decline in hormone levels which leads to physical deterioration and the many illnesses and diseases which have been considered “normal” aging.

Physical deterioration and functional decline do not have to be part of aging. Through proper hormone supplementation it is possible to alleviate, or even stop, many of the negative symptoms and diseases of aging heretofore considered a natural and normal part of growing older.

Progesterone Therapy for Women

Progesterone is a female hormone produced in the ovaries and occurs naturally with, and balances, estrogen. Natural, bio-identical progesterone is essential for the overall health and sense of well-being of women.

For menopausal women, who lose progesterone, a lack of progesterone produces symptoms and disease states similar to those of estrogen deficiency. Treatment with natural, bio-identical progesterone is preventative and results in a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis, increased libido, and increased sense of well-being. Progesterone is a natural anxiolytic and mood enhancer and helps alleviate the symptoms of menopause such as irritability, insomnia, mood swings, headaches and hot flashes. Progesterone is also essential in controlling bad cholesterol levels (LDL cholesterol) and increasing good cholesterol levels (HDL cholesterol). Furthermore, there is strong evidence that natural, bio-identical progesterone is protective against breast and uterine cancer.

For pre-menopausal women natural, bio-identical progesterone is helpful in alleviating the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) such as headaches, irritability, moodiness, and bloating which are caused by low progesterone levels near and during menstruation. And, as in the menopausal woman, progesterone is a natural anxiolytic and mood enhancer and imparts a sense of well-being, is essential in controlling bad and increasing good cholesterol levels, and is also protective against breast and uterine cancer.

Natural, bio-identical progesterone should not be confused with medroxyprogesterone—a synthetic progestin (trade names Provera, Norplant, Depo-Provera to name a few). Medroxyprogesterone is a synthetic drug that is chemically different than progesterone, is not natural to the human body, and has harmful and unwanted side effects. Whereas natural, bio-identical progesterone has been shown to be protective against cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, breast and uterine cancer, and depression—Medroxyprogesterone has been shown to increase these risks. Furthermore, medroxyprogesterone has many unwanted side effects which include: headaches, fluid retention, insomnia, birth defects, and PMS like symptoms. Natural, bio-identical progesterone has no side effects.

In summary, benefits of natural, bio-identical progesterone include:

  • Increased energy
  • Improved mood and sense of well-being
  • Increased libido
  • Alleviation of menopausal symptoms
  • Alleviation of symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
  • Decreased risk of breast and uterine cancer
  • Decreased risk of osteoporosis (thinning bones)

What is growth hormone?

Produced in the pituitary gland in the brain, growth hormone is essential for the maintenance of tissues and organs throughout life and steadily declines as we age. Growth hormone has been shown to increase muscle mass and bone density, decrease body fat, and increase exercise capacity. Growth hormone has also been shown to stimulate the immune system.

What is DHEA?

Produced in the adrenal glands, DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is essential for immune system function, protects against Alzheimer’s Disease, and has been correlated with longevity. DHEA is also a precursor of the sex hormones and is an important building block for the production of these hormones. DHEA has declined markedly by age 40 in both men and women.

What is thyroid hormone?

Hormone produced by the thyroid gland, thyroid hormone is essential for just about every metabolic process in the human body and a severe deficiency of thyroid hormone is fatal. Thyroid hormone declines steadily with age. Low, or sub-optimal, thyroid hormone levels results in weight gain, fatigue, cold intolerance, hair loss, thin and dry skin, and brittle nails. Restoration of thyroid hormone to optimal levels results in increased energy and metabolism and a reverse of the above symptoms.

What is progesterone?

Hormone produced in the ovaries, progesterone protects against breast and uterine cancer and also functions to maintain bone health and prevent osteoporosis. Progesterone is a natural anxiolytic and mood enhancer and also helps alleviate the symptoms of menopause. Progesterone occurs naturally with, and balances, estrogen and should always be prescribed when estrogen is prescribed.

What is estrogen?

Hormone produced in the ovaries, estrogen is essential for women to protect against heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s Disease, and osteoporosis. Low estrogen is also responsible for the symptoms of menopause and replacing estrogen to proper levels prevents hot flashes, mood swings, depression, insomnia, and vaginal dryness and atrophy. Estrogen is also essential for female libido and has a beneficial effect on cholesterol.

What is testosterone?

Hormone produced in the testicles in men and the ovaries in women. Although found in much higher levels in men than women, testosterone is essential in both men and women for maintaining muscle mass, libido, and immune system function. Testosterone also protects against cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and type 2 diabetes. In men higher testosterone levels have also been closely associated with a lower risk of prostate cancer. Testosterone is also a mood enhancer and imparts a sense of wellbeing. Testosterone levels begin to decline in both men and women around age 30.
