Progesterone Therapy for Women

Progesterone is a female hormone produced in the ovaries and occurs naturally with, and balances, estrogen. Natural, bio-identical progesterone is essential for the overall health and sense of well-being of women.

For menopausal women, who lose progesterone, a lack of progesterone produces symptoms and disease states similar to those of estrogen deficiency. Treatment with natural, bio-identical progesterone is preventative and results in a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis, increased libido, and increased sense of well-being. Progesterone is a natural anxiolytic and mood enhancer and helps alleviate the symptoms of menopause such as irritability, insomnia, mood swings, headaches and hot flashes. Progesterone is also essential in controlling bad cholesterol levels (LDL cholesterol) and increasing good cholesterol levels (HDL cholesterol). Furthermore, there is strong evidence that natural, bio-identical progesterone is protective against breast and uterine cancer.

For pre-menopausal women natural, bio-identical progesterone is helpful in alleviating the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) such as headaches, irritability, moodiness, and bloating which are caused by low progesterone levels near and during menstruation. And, as in the menopausal woman, progesterone is a natural anxiolytic and mood enhancer and imparts a sense of well-being, is essential in controlling bad and increasing good cholesterol levels, and is also protective against breast and uterine cancer.

Natural, bio-identical progesterone should not be confused with medroxyprogesterone—a synthetic progestin (trade names Provera, Norplant, Depo-Provera to name a few). Medroxyprogesterone is a synthetic drug that is chemically different than progesterone, is not natural to the human body, and has harmful and unwanted side effects. Whereas natural, bio-identical progesterone has been shown to be protective against cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, breast and uterine cancer, and depression—Medroxyprogesterone has been shown to increase these risks. Furthermore, medroxyprogesterone has many unwanted side effects which include: headaches, fluid retention, insomnia, birth defects, and PMS like symptoms. Natural, bio-identical progesterone has no side effects.

In summary, benefits of natural, bio-identical progesterone include:

  • Increased energy
  • Improved mood and sense of well-being
  • Increased libido
  • Alleviation of menopausal symptoms
  • Alleviation of symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
  • Decreased risk of breast and uterine cancer
  • Decreased risk of osteoporosis (thinning bones)
